마이크로소프트는 기업 내부 오피스 사용자들 사이의 커뮤니케이션을 위한 Office Communications Server 2007의 비공개 베타서비스를 실시합니다. Microsoft Office System의 구성 요소 가운데 하나인 이 어플리케이션은 Live Communications Server 2005의 후속 버전으로 내년 2분기에 출시될 계획인 이번 버전에는 VoIP; Voice over Internet Protocol 기능이 통합되어 제공될 것입니다. 어플리케이션은 SIP; Session Initiation Protocol을 채택하여 시장 리더인 Skype와 차별화를 꾀하였습니다. 오피스 커뮤니케이션 서버의 새 버전과 연동된 오피스 어플리케이션을 사용하는 사용자는 어플리케이션에 표시된 '사람 이름'을 클릭하면 즉시 전화로 연결됩니다. 마이크로소프트는 지난 회계연도동안 Teleo, Mediastreams를 인수하며 VoIP 기술을 획득하였습니다.
VoIP는 상대적으로 저렴한 비용을 무기로 기업 사용자들의 주의를 끄는데 성공하였으나 기업들은 현재 시스템과의 통합 작업에 필요할 막대한 초기투자비용과 통합용 장비들의 높은 단가때문에 현재의 시스템을 유지하고 있었습니다. 하지만 오피스 커뮤니케이션 서버만 설치하면 직원들이 일상 업무에 사용하던 기존 소프트웨어, 장비와 완벽하게 호환이 됩니다. 사용자들은 Word, Outlook과 같은 친숙한 오피스 어플리케이션들에서 손쉽게 일대일 혹은 컨퍼런스 콜을 연결할 수 있습니다. Exchange 2007과 연결한다면 보이스메일과 이메일 및 음성 통신 데이터 통합 관리 시스템도 구축 가능합니다. 또한 마이크로소프트는 Office Communications Server 2007과 기존의 탁상용 전화기, TDM; Time Division Multiplexer, IP based PBXs; Private Branch eXchanges와의 호환성을 보장하기 위하여 Alcatel-Lucent, Avaya, Cisco, LG-Nortel, Mitel, NEC Philips Unified Solutions, Nortel, Polycom, Siemens 등과 파트너쉽을 체결해왔습니다.
기업 사무 처리에 VoIP를 도입하면 단순히 비용 절감을 넘어서 경영 프로세스의 통합을 이끌어낼 수 있습니다. 기업들은 장기적 관점에서 기존 설비를 업그레이드하여 사무 어플리케이션과 통합된 VoIP 시스템의 도입을 고려해야 할 것입니다.
